MR. POLLARD'S OPUS SKIS
MR. POLLARD'S OPUS DETAILS
POWDER SKIS FROM THE FUTURE
Opus is defined as ”A great work of art or literature, especially the greatest single work of an artist”. In Eric’s case, his 2012 Line Opus ski was developed with over 13 years of progressing powder skiing & innovative ski designs with Line.
As Eric says - “Anyone can make a really fat ski float in powder, but making it also versatile enough to rip firm snow is where they all fall short.” The Line Opus ski is a breakthrough in versatility within the powder ski category. We actually lowered the Early Rise™ tip geometry enabling it to PLANE INSTEAD OF PLOW in the powder. We also reduced the length of Early Taper™ putting 20% more Active Edge™ length in contact with the snow than others in it’s class, for MORE GRIP & LESS SLIP. This better floating tip geometry allowed us to actually reduce the width to 118mm for increased quickness, reduced weight and a skiing experience that is as ahead of it’s time as the skier that developed it.
ERIC POLLARD - "Over the past decade I have designed and skied over 100 different prototypes in search of skis that allow me to ride the mountain the way I want to. We have gone to every extreme from super fat 140mm to narrow, to super short, to over 200cm long, extreme Early Rise to no Early Rise, lots of side cuts to reverse sidecut, blunt tips, pointy tips. We have applied every flex pattern we can think of, mounted each ski in different locations and analyzed the differences over and over again, to learn so much from each ski. The new Opus and the Bacon are the culmination of the last 13 years of work. They blend a perfect mix of flex, sidecut, tip shape, overall shape/ footprint, mounting point, Early rise, Early taper, and camber. They are honestly the best skis I have ever skied."

MR. POLLARD'S OPUS ART

When he’s not slashing pow switch, Eric Pollard likes to unplug at his home in Oregon and paint. Luckily his unmatched style transitions from snow to the canvas, and especially to our skis. Instead of us telling you about his work, why not have Pollard himself give a little insight into this graphic.
What was the inspiration for this graphic?
Where I surf in the northwest cypress trees grow in crazy places. There is one particular tree out on a huge rock in the ocean that I drive by often. I love the graphic shapes of trees, so I decided to base the graphic on a cypress, and then add a large root system.
Describe your creative process:
Each year I just leave my mind open and take in what I experience throughout the year. Then in the spring when the winter is over I usually have an idea, a sketch, photos, or a concept to base the graphics on. From that point I elaborate on sketches, or take the idea and draw a basic layout. When I have an idea of how the art will layout on the ski, I then begin to paint the final. Over the years I have learned a lot from all the graphics we have made. I have tried so many different mediums. I wanted to make the graphics very clean and contrast to other ski graphics.
How long does the process take?
Depends. Typically takes me about a week to draw and create a clear vision for the concept. It usually takes me a day or two to paint the final. Then the final has to dry, which can take another week depending on the medium. Once the painting is dry I scan the painting in prepare the file for the graphic design process. Next I place the painting on a template, create logos, and finally a base graphic. All together each ski takes me about two weeks from start to finish.
What time of year do you do most of your art?
The spring/ summer.
How does skiing influence your art?
Skiing is my life, so it dictates what I experience throughout the year, which in turn translates to what I paint or draw. As cliche as it may seem, I really do see some aspects of skiing as an art. Skiing is much more to me than just acrobatics or charging big mountains. I love the entire experience of being in the mountains, choosing a face, and drawing a line down it. Where you make your turn, how you hold your body in the air, and what pace you choose to ski at reflects what you are striving for.

My local mountain doesn't get too much snow, only around 60 annual inches, but i had to have these skis, when i got them, even though they were powder skis and we didn't have too much of that, it made 5 inches feel like 3 ft. i love these skis, and they will do it ALL. I was stunned how well they preformed on the groomers. GET THESE SKIS!

Versatile. Amazingly versatile. The combination of the shape and mount give you a very neutral skiing position, and makes the ski very responsive in a wide range of conditions. This balance combined with the soft flex in the tips transistioning to stiff underfoot makes for a pretty crazy blend of nimbleness and stability. When you ski forward and pressure the tips in soft snow, the flex in the tips initiates tight turns, and the ski comes around so fast that they're really nimble in tight places. In wide-open soft snow, a more neutral stance brings the stiffness underfoot to bear, and the soft flex up front keeps the tips planing while you rail faster longer turns. Even with a short tip given the center-mount, they float at low speeds whiel being stable enough to let you push them at faster speeds. I've had any number of skis that are either soft and super-floaty at low speeds but get overwhelmed at high speeds or are stiff and clunky at low speeds but come alive at mid to high speeds. The Opus pretty much kills it from 0-60 in the deep and lets you ski it very nimbley up front or more wide open from the middle in a way that makes it a ton of fun.
The same thing is pretty much true in bounds, where the shape really comes into play. Even with the tip and tail rocker, they still have a pretty long effective edge, and since the rocker is fairly moderate, you don't have to lean them over at extreme angles to put all of that edge on the snow. The ski seems to gets stiff in the front pretty close to where the sidecut contact starts, so even at high speeds in chopped up chunder, the ski rails on edge. Also, since you're standing right in the middle of the sidecut with not-a-ton of tip, they're really quick edge to edge and easy to throw around. This makes them awesome in the backcountry on non-blower days, and they don't hook up in crusty conditions at all.
The Opus is an awesome ski, and is kind of making me feel guilty for owning many other pairs of skis. It's fun, playful, and will surprise you with it's stability. It favors a very balanced stance, and will reward you with a huge performance range if you can stay centered and drive it. It floats like a champ. If you want to straightline everything and sit in the back seat, it is not your ski. All in all, it would probably be the perfect one-ski-quiver for a western skier, and they're so light you can throw on a tech binding and have a pretty dope do-everything backcountry setup. Score another point for Line and Eric Pollard, both of which are pretty much killing it right now.

You haven't skied until you have tried the Opus. They have ridiculous float, stable when charging, extremely nimble, and dig trenches on corduroy. You will slay everything with the Opus. These skis will make you feel like a princess underneath the stars in a white dress surrounded by a mariachi band and elves. They are amazing!

- Nimble
- Quick

- Stable
Cons

The Opuses are the dopeness. Definitely more stable than the EP Pros but just as nimble when need be. The stomp factor is high too; never do I ever feel like these skis are going dive at any point.
Pros
- Buttery Flex
- Mega Pop
- Perfect Float
Cons
Best Uses
- Backcountry Booters
- Bombin' Cliffs
- Resort Pow Shredding
The most surprising thing about this ski is how well it handles in all snow conditions. It floats in the deepest pow I can find, and can still hold an edge blasting through crud or carving up a groomer. Also, if you like to hit BC jumps you would absolutely love the way the Opus feels in the air. They are lightweight, snappy, and hands down the most maneuverable pow ski I have ever jumped on- you feel like you have park skis on until you stomp in the pow and realize you are riding a ski thats actually 118mm underfoot.
Pros
- Durable
- Futuristic Control
- Insane floatability
- Lightweight
Cons
Best Uses
I used to read the snow report thoroughly before going out to decide which ski i would use. Was it a 3ft deep day where I would need my old EP's to stay afloat, or would it be another foot deep topper for the day where i would try to charge some lines that needed the control of a more rigid ski such as the bacon?
Now I only read the report for avalanche danger and where I'm going to ski. The Opus is perfect no matter what conditions are thrown its way. This is my touring ski, my jump ski, my woods ski, my exposed lines ski, and my pillow ski.
Pros
- Best pow ski ever
- Playful
- Quick
- Versatile
Cons
Best Uses
- All mountain shredding
- Back country jumping
- Deep pow skiing
- Mini golf
The name definitely speaks for itself, this is Pollard's best ski ever. The opus is a perfect mix of all of the best qualities of the old pollard and bacon. It is literally the best ski I've ever ridden. You can do it all with the opus; hit big bc jumps, drop cliffs, land and take off switch. They shred deep pow, chunder, and groomers without compromise. I get excited every time i step into these skis.
Pros
- instant classic
- Perfect flex playful
Cons
Best Uses
- all mountain
- Backside country
This ski is nothing short of amazing! I actually thought that they couldn't out-do last years bacons but I was wrong. Line has always had a knack for making incredible skis, however, this time they may have outdone themselves. The opus will be talked about for a long time. I believe some may overlook this ski because they believe its a pow-only pro model but this ski rips all mountain as well and out performs anything else in the category. This ski is super fun and playfull all over the mountain and in my opinion will redefine what a ski this wide is capable of. If you loved last years bacons, do not even hesitate to buy this ski. You will not be sorry.
